A decade of discovery - the Cancer-Immunity Cycle

2013

In 2013, I worked with Genentech researchers to create illustrations of the cancer-immunity cycle to be published in the journal Immunity. Their pioneering paper provided a framework to understand anti-cancer immunity.* In 2023, a 10th anniversary update was to be published reviewing scientific advances made since publication of the original manuscript.

The original authors approached me needing five updated figures for their new paper as well as a cover illustration for the journal’s special issue with a one week deadline. Over the next five days, I worked closely with the authors and journal editor to ensure the illustrations included all necessary updates and were delivered quickly with enough time to be properly reviewed. After further revisions, the final files were delivered formatted for publication.

Once the publication figures were complete, I began on the design for the journal cover.

Immunity described the cover illustration as “depicting a new day for the cancer-immunity cycle, noting both the permanence of this conceptual framework and the continuous progress in the field.”

This issue also included six review articles on additional advances in the study of immunology as a tool to fight cancer. The cover represents ten years of scientific breakthroughs not only for my client, but for researchers from more than a dozen institutions in four countries.
